New Heirlooms at Gasworks
Material Action at Gasworks: New Heirlooms Kintsugi Workshop
Another fantastic few days at Gasworks! We invited young people from Lambeth and Wandsworth to learn a modern form of Kintsugi – the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold.
We began by sharing stories about a special and personal ceramic heirloom as a way of exploring our relationship with objects and what they say about us.
The participants were also asked to bring in a throw away ceramic to add to a mountain of ‘orphaned’ objects collected from local charity shops.
Then out came the hammers!
Through adopting the Kintsugi technique, these old and new ceramic shards were merged to create ‘New Heirlooms’ echoing the transition and evolution of the local Vauxhall and Nine Elms area.
Here are some of the results!
